The Benefits of Boredom

Boredom isn’t something to be feared—it’s a stepping stone to creativity. Research shows that when children are left to their own devices (without screens), they learn to entertain themselves, develop problem-solving skills, and think outside the box. These moments of “nothing to do” encourage them to explore their inner worlds and experiment with ideas.

Practical Tips to Turn Boredom Into Opportunity

Provide Open-Ended Resources

Instead of offering structured activities or screens to combat boredom, equip your child with tools that invite creativity. Try:

  • Art supplies like paper, crayons, or paint.
  • Building materials such as LEGO®, wooden blocks, or recycled household items.
  • A journal or sketchbook for doodling, writing, or brainstorming.
These resources give children the freedom to explore without predefined outcomes.

Ask Thought-Provoking Questions

Help your child reframe boredom as an opportunity. Encourage them with prompts like:

  • “If you could invent a game, what would it look like?”
  • “What story could you tell using just your toys?”
  • “How many ways can you use this empty cardboard box?”
These questions inspire creative thinking and spark curiosity.

Create a ‘Boredom Jar’

Together with your child, brainstorm a list of fun, creative activities they can do when boredom strikes. Write each idea on a slip of paper and place it in a jar. When they feel bored, they can pick an activity at random. Ideas might include:

  • Build a fort out of blankets.
  • Draw a comic strip.
  • Invent a dance routine or a new song.

Embrace Unstructured Time

Resist the urge to fill every moment of your child’s schedule. Allowing pockets of unstructured time encourages them to rely on their imagination and resourcefulness. This space is where creativity truly thrives.

Model Boredom Positively

Show your child that boredom isn’t a bad thing. Share your own experiences:

  • “I was feeling bored the other day, so I tried a new recipe. It was fun to experiment!”

This helps children see boredom as a normal and productive part of life.
